Inside SPS Hospitals: What B.Sc MLS Students Learned on a Hospital Visit in Ludhiana

Three specialised sessions, a full hospital tour and a room full of doctors and lab experts: how Indian and international B.Sc Medical Lab Science students at SBS spent 1 October at SPS Hospitals learning diagnostics, pathology and biochemistry where they are actually practised.
A Day Where the Textbook Became a Hospital
Every Medical Lab Science student eventually asks the same question: what does all of this look like when it is real? The slides on blood tests, tissue samples and enzyme panels make sense in a classroom. The moment they truly click is when you stand inside a working hospital and watch how a sample travels from a patient's bedside to a result a doctor can act on.
That is exactly what happened on 1 October 2026, when B.Sc Medical Lab Science (MLS) students from SBS (Synetic Business School), Ludhiana, spent a day at SPS Hospitals. They sat through three specialised sessions, toured the hospital from end to end, and came back with a clearer picture of where diagnostics, pathology and biochemistry are heading. It was a day full of exposure for both our Indian and international students, who learned side by side.
Three Specialised Sessions, One Clear Message
The visit was built around three focused sessions, each tied directly to what B.Sc MLS students study and what they will do for a living.
- Diagnostics: how modern hospitals decide which tests to run, how results are produced and checked, and how a report becomes a treatment decision.
- Pathology: how samples are examined to detect disease, and why the pathologist's work sits behind so many of a doctor's diagnoses.
- Biochemistry: how blood and body-fluid chemistry is measured, and what those numbers tell a clinician about how a patient's body is functioning.
One session set the tone. Its title said it all: *Laboratory Services – Foundation and Backbone of Health Care*. It was presented by the hospital's Director of Lab Services, Dr. Kavita Shrivastava. For students who sometimes wonder whether the lab is a "support" role, hearing a senior hospital leader describe it as the backbone of care is a powerful reframing.

A Full Tour of the Hospital
Sessions explain the theory. The tour showed it at work. Students were taken through the hospital and saw how its departments connect, and how the laboratory sits at the centre of that network rather than at the edge of it. Every department depends on it, from the first screening test to the final confirmation.
Seeing that flow first-hand changes how a student thinks about their own future role. A lab professional is not working in isolation. They are part of a team where speed, accuracy and communication matter as much as technical skill.
Advancements in Diagnostics: What Students Took Away
Medical science does not stand still, and neither does the lab. A large part of the day was about what is new:
- The latest machines and instruments now used for testing and analysis.
- How diagnostic methods are advancing, so that conditions can be detected earlier and more precisely.
- The innovations in medical science that are changing what a laboratory can do, and what employers will expect from the next generation of technicians and technologists.
For students, this is the difference between learning a syllabus and learning a profession. A textbook shows how a test works in principle. A hospital shows which tools are actually used today, and how quickly that is changing.
Prevention Is Part of the Picture
Hospitals do not only treat illness. Around the building, health-awareness material reinforced a point MLS students hear often: much of modern healthcare is about catching and preventing disease early. One display, an adult vaccination chart, listed the vaccines commonly recommended for adults, including influenza, pneumococcal, hepatitis A and B, Tdap, HPV, meningococcal and typhoid.

For a lab student, that connects directly to the work: screening tests, immunity and infection testing, and the role of diagnostics in public health are all part of the same story.
Why SBS Takes Industrial Visits Seriously
This visit is not a one-off. At SBS, industry exposure is built into how students learn. Industrial visits take students out of the classroom and into the places where their subject is actually practised. We wrote about the thinking behind this in From Coca-Cola to Rockman: How SBS Turns Punjab's Industries into Living Classrooms.
For healthcare students, the "industry" is the hospital. A visit like this one gives them something no lecture can:
- A real picture of how a hospital laboratory runs, day to day.
- A chance to ask professionals questions and hear honest answers about the career.
- Motivation. Students who have seen the work often study it differently afterwards.
Tie-Ups With Leading Hospitals Like SPS
Visits like this are possible because of SBS's working relationships with leading hospitals. SPS Hospitals is one of them. The connection goes beyond a single tour:
- Guest lectures: doctors and healthcare professionals come to campus to teach and share experience. Earlier sessions have included a talk by a Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana specialist on robotic surgery and early cancer detection.
- Hospital visits: students go to the hospital, as they did on this day.
- Health camps: SBS has also organised a free consultation camp in collaboration with SPS Hospitals.
- Networking: students meet doctors, pathologists and microbiologists in person, the people who may one day be their mentors, colleagues or employers.
That last point matters more than it looks. Healthcare is a field built on trust and referrals. A student who has already shaken hands with the profession starts their career with a head start.
Exposure for Indian and International Students Alike
One of the best things about a visit like this is that it levels the field. Indian and international students walked the same corridors, sat in the same sessions and put their questions to the same doctors and lab experts. For students who have travelled across continents to study at SBS, it is a chance to see Indian healthcare at work and to build professional contacts. For students from Punjab and beyond, it is a chance to learn alongside classmates from different countries and healthcare systems. Both groups leave with the same thing: real exposure to a working hospital.
Who This Is Great For
If you are considering a career in healthcare but not in the operating theatre, medical laboratory science is one of the most in-demand paths. It is a good fit if you:
- Enjoy science, accuracy and solving problems from evidence.
- Want a healthcare career without the MBBS route. See Medical Courses Without NEET in Punjab 2026 and Why SBS Paramedical Programs Are the Smartest Alternative to an Expensive MBBS.
- Already hold a diploma in lab technology. Learn how lateral entry into B.Sc MLS second year can save you a year.
International students are a regular part of these visits. SBS's community of 500+ African students across 16+ countries studies on the same campus and takes part in the same activities, and the 50% scholarship for international students applies to degree programs, with tuition at just $300 per semester.
