Why SBS Is the Best College for Kenyan Students Studying in India (2026 Guide)

KCSE 2025 sent 270,508 students over the C+ line but only 202,133 into degree programs. India is the safer, cheaper, easier alternative: SBS in Ludhiana offers direct admission, an automatic 50% scholarship and tuition of just $300 a semester.

The C+ Line: Where Kenya's Degree Funnel Narrows

Every year, KCSE results decide who walks straight into a public-university degree. For the 2025 cohort, about 993,000 candidates sat the exam and 270,508 reached the C+ needed for a degree. KUCCPS placed 202,133 of them in degree programs. That leaves roughly 68,000 students who cleared C+ without a degree placement — more than 51,000 of whom never applied for one, including students who chose private and self-sponsored routes instead. And more than 700,000 candidates finished below the degree cut-off altogether.

Whether you missed your course by a few cluster points or never wanted to queue for one, the question is the same: where else can a recognised degree come from?

Kenya and India: Already Closely Connected

About 3,500 Kenyan students are studying in around 50 institutions across India, according to Indian government figures, and more than 400 Kenyans a year train or study in India under the ITEC and ICCR programs. For 2026–27, India awarded 105 scholarships to Kenyan students: the India-Africa Maitri allocation rose from 80 to 102 places, with three more Kenyans receiving Quad STEM scholarships.

Those places are valuable, and limited. SBS is the direct route: you apply to the college, and its automatic 50% scholarship needs no application and no competition.

Safer, Cheaper, Easier: Why India Beats the Usual Alternatives

Kenyan students have traditionally looked to the UK, the US, Canada and Australia. Here is how India at SBS compares on the three questions that matter most.

Cheaper

The UK charges £558 for the student visa, £776 a year in health surcharge and requires at least £10,539 in maintenance funds (outside London) on top of first-year tuition. At SBS, tuition is just $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship.

Easier

  • No cluster-point lottery. Admission runs on AIU equivalence of your KCSE and on the program's eligibility, not on KUCCPS cluster points, and SBS evaluates your result slip individually.
  • A document-based path. The eight steps below run on vetting your documents. SBS issues your admission letter within 48 hours of application and fee confirmation.
  • One contact from start to finish. A single WhatsApp line, then FRRO registration, university registration and visa/permit support on arrival.
  • A well-trodden corridor. About 3,500 Kenyans already study in India, and your visa runs through the High Commission in Nairobi.
  • English throughout. Every program is taught in English.

Safer

  • A safer bet. The odds elsewhere are steep for African applicants. In 2025 the US refused 64% of F-1 student visa applications from Africa. Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023. UK refusals doubled to about 13% of all study-visa applications in early 2026, concentrated in South Asia and Africa.
  • Safer for your future. Check recognition with Kenya's CUE before you enroll (see below), and SBS provides the official documents the application needs.
  • Safer where you live. A gated guest house about seven minutes from campus, 500+ African students on campus, and 20+ years of experience. No country is risk-free, and experiences in a country of 1.4 billion people vary — which is why SBS puts community and arrival support first. India's national emergency number is 112.

Check Recognition First: What CUE Requires

Before you choose any overseas degree, check how Kenya will treat it. Kenya's Commission for University Education (CUE) recognises and equates foreign qualifications when the institution is accredited and recognised and the holder met Kenya's minimum entry requirement for the equivalent qualification. In practice, a student who reached C+ or above has met the entry bar for a degree, while a student whose grade sits between C- and C+ is better placed looking at diplomas, where Kenya's own entry bar is lower.

Read CUE's current guidelines before you enroll, especially if you plan to work in Kenya. SBS provides the official transcripts and documents the recognition application needs.

What India Looks At Instead of Cluster Points

Indian admission does not run on KUCCPS cluster points. It runs on whether your secondary qualification is recognised as equal to India's Class 12 — the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) evaluates foreign certificates, and SBS's team manages the process for a one-time fee of about $60 — and on whether you meet the program's own eligibility. Send your KCSE certificate and result slip to SBS and the admissions team tells you which programs you qualify for. It is an individual evaluation, not a guarantee. Exam and equivalence fees are paid to the university and AIU and can change, so the team confirms current amounts when you apply.

No KCSE? You May Still Have a Way In

KCSE is the usual route into SBS, but it is not the only one. Certain programs at SBS can admit students who do not hold KCSE results — whether your results are missing, incomplete or not yet available. Which programs, and on what terms, depends on your background, so SBS does not list them here. Message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730, tell them where you stand, and they will tell you what is open to you. Eligibility is assessed case by case. If you plan to return to Kenya, also check how Kenya's CUE will treat the qualification you earn, as explained above.

Degree and Diploma Programs Open to Kenyan Students

  • Undergraduate: BBA, B.Com (Hons.), BCA, B.Sc IT, B.Sc IT with Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc Medical Lab Science, B.Sc Textile Designing, B.Voc (Paramedical)
  • Postgraduate: MBA, M.Com, M.Sc IT
  • Diploma (SIMTA): Project Management, Business Management & Entrepreneurship, Financial Analyst Management, Retailing & Logistics, Public Health & Hospital Administration, Information Technology, Advanced Information Technology, Data Science, Textile & Fashion Designing, Medical Lab Technology

Diplomas run for one, two or three years, are open to students from any academic stream, and come without the heavy examination and equivalence fees of a degree. With the 70% diploma scholarship, tuition starts at about $500 a year, plus a one-time $150 registration fee.

Costs: SBS vs the UK

  • UK: £558 for the student visa, £776 a year in the Immigration Health Surcharge, and proof of at least £10,539 in maintenance funds (outside London) held on top of first-year tuition — before you have paid a single course fee.
  • SBS, Ludhiana: After the automatic scholarship, $300 tuition per semester plus an exam fee of about $140, with one-time costs of a $200 admission fee, a $150 registration fee and about $60 for AIU equivalence. Accommodation at the Synetic Guest House is $100 per month for a single room or $50 per person for twin sharing, plus utilities.

Practical Pointers for Kenyan Students

  • English-medium study. Every program is taught in English, the language you already studied in.
  • Getting here. Fly into New Delhi or Chandigarh, then take a bus or train to Ludhiana — roughly 100 km from Chandigarh and 310 km from Delhi.
  • Health requirements. Check the current vaccination requirements for travelers from Kenya, including yellow fever, before you fly. SBS's team confirms what applies to you.
  • FRRO registration. Students staying longer than 180 days must register within 14 days of arrival, and SBS walks you through it.
  • A ready-made community. Kenya is among the 16+ countries represented at SBS, alongside 500+ African students on campus.
  • Somewhere to live. The Synetic Guest House is a secure gated community about seven minutes from campus, with private bathrooms and a shared kitchen. Read our guide to the Synetic Guest House for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is studying in India a safer alternative to the UK, US or Canada for Kenyan students?

In terms of visa and policy risk, yes. In 2025 the US refused 64% of F-1 student visa applications from Africa, Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023, and UK refusals doubled to about 13% of study-visa applications in early 2026. At SBS you also live in a gated guest house near campus among 500+ African students. No country is risk-free, so SBS provides arrival support, and you should check recognition with Kenya's CUE before you enroll.

Is studying in India cheaper and easier than studying in the UK?

Yes. A UK student visa costs £558, plus £776 a year in health surcharge and proof of at least £10,539 in funds, before tuition. At SBS, tuition is $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship. Admission also runs on AIU equivalence and document vetting rather than KUCCPS cluster points, with one WhatsApp contact from first message to first month.

Can I get admission to SBS without KCSE results?

Yes, for certain programs. KCSE is the usual route, but some SBS programs can admit students without it. SBS does not publish which programs, because the options depend on your background — message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730 with your situation and they will tell you what is available. Eligibility is assessed case by case.

Is KCSE accepted for admission to Indian universities?

Indian admission requires your secondary qualification to be recognised as equal to India's Class 12 through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). SBS's admissions team manages the equivalence process and evaluates your KCSE result slip individually to tell you which programs you qualify for.

Can I apply to SBS with a KCSE grade below C+?

SBS evaluates each KCSE result individually, so send your certificate and result slip to the admissions team. Bear in mind that Kenya's Commission for University Education recognises foreign qualifications when you met Kenya's minimum entry requirement for the equivalent qualification, so students between C- and C+ are usually better placed looking at diplomas.

Will Kenya's CUE recognise my Indian degree?

CUE recognises and equates foreign qualifications when the institution is accredited and recognised and the holder met Kenya's minimum entry requirement for the equivalent qualification. Check CUE's current guidelines before you enroll, especially if you plan to work in Kenya. SBS provides the official documents the application needs.

How much does it cost a Kenyan student to study at SBS?

After the automatic 50% scholarship, tuition is $300 per semester plus an exam fee of about $140. One-time costs are a $200 admission fee, a $150 registration fee and about $60 for AIU equivalence. Exam and equivalence fees can change.

Are there scholarships for Kenyan students in India?

Yes. India awarded 105 scholarships to Kenyan students for 2026–27, including 102 under the India-Africa Maitri scheme, but places are limited. SBS also gives every African student an automatic 50% tuition scholarship, with no separate application.

How many Kenyans study in India?

According to Indian government figures, about 3,500 Kenyan students are studying in around 50 institutions across India, and more than 400 Kenyans a year train or study in India under ITEC and ICCR programs.

Which Indian mission serves Kenyan student visa applicants?

The High Commission of India in Nairobi. SBS confirms the exact documents and appointment process for your application once your consent letter is issued.

Where do Kenyan students live in Ludhiana?

Most international students stay at the Synetic Guest House in Rajgarh Fusion, a secure gated community about 4 km from campus. A single room costs $100 per month and twin sharing $50 per person per month, plus utilities.

How does a Kenyan student start the application process?

By messaging an SBS representative on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730. From there, SBS vets your KCSE documents, issues a Consent/Admission Letter within 48 hours, and guides you step by step through registration, the Study in India portal, your visa application and your visa collection.
