Why SBS Is the Best College for Nigerian Students Studying in India (2026 Guide)

When the UK tightened its rules and the US paused new student visas for Nigerians, India became the safer, cheaper, easier alternative. The case for SBS in Ludhiana: WAEC/NECO accepted, an automatic 50% scholarship, tuition from just $300 a semester.
When the UK, the US and the Naira All Moved at Once
For a generation of Nigerian students, "abroad" meant the UK, and the route was well worn. Then three things changed almost together. In January 2024 the UK banned most international postgraduate students from bringing dependants — a policy that hit Nigeria harder than almost anywhere, because Nigeria and Sri Lanka were the only countries where dependant visas had outnumbered student visas. Nigerian applications to the UK fell by 46% and postgraduate enrolments by 39% year on year after the change, according to industry reporting. The naira, meanwhile, slid from roughly ₦470 to the dollar to around ₦1,500, making every pound and dollar of foreign tuition far heavier in local terms. And from 1 January 2026 the United States suspended entry for Nigerians on new student (F and M), exchange (J) and visitor visas, with exceptions for people who already held valid visas.
The ambition to study abroad did not die. It needs a destination that still says yes, at a price that still makes sense.
Nigeria Already Sends More Students to India Than Any Other African Country
India's own survey of higher education (AISHE) recorded a record 58,134 foreign students from 173 countries in 2023–24. Nigeria accounted for 5.5% of them — the fifth-largest source country after Nepal, the UAE, the United States and Bangladesh, and the largest from Africa. Nigerian enrollment has climbed from 225 students in 2010–11 to 3,205 in 2023–24. You would not be a pioneer. You would be joining a corridor that thousands of Nigerian families have already tested.
What the UK Route Costs Now
The UK's numbers are steep and still rising. A student visa application now costs £558 (from April 2026). The Immigration Health Surcharge adds £776 for every year of the course, paid upfront. You must also show at least £10,539 in maintenance funds (outside London) for courses of nine months or more, on top of first-year tuition — and that requirement rises to £10,827 for applications after 30 November 2026. For most postgraduate taught courses, a spouse or children can no longer come with you. Convert all of that at ₦1,500 to the dollar and the arithmetic is settled long before term begins.
The US Door Is Closed to New Student Visas
The US proclamation that took effect on 1 January 2026 placed Nigeria under a partial suspension of entry. It bars Nigerians from entering on new F (academic study), M (vocational study) and J (exchange) visas, as well as visitor visas, while students already in the US or holding a valid visa before the effective date are not affected. Immigration policy changes quickly, so check the current US guidance — but a student planning for this year should plan for an alternative.
Safer, Cheaper, Easier: The India Scorecard
Put the routes side by side and India at SBS wins on the three questions Nigerian families actually ask.
Cheaper
Against the UK's £558 visa fee, £776 a year in health surcharge and £10,539 or more in maintenance funds, SBS tuition is just $300 per semester after the automatic scholarship. That is a number you can plan around even when the naira moves, rather than a balance you must show in your account before term begins.
Easier
- Your certificate already travels. WAEC and NECO results go through the AIU equivalence evaluation, which SBS manages for you.
- No cut-off to beat. The eight steps below run on vetting your documents. SBS issues your admission letter within 48 hours of application and fee confirmation.
- One contact from start to finish. A single WhatsApp line, then FRRO registration, university registration and visa/permit support on arrival.
- English throughout. Every program is taught in English.
Safer
- A safer bet. Nigerians now face a suspension of new US student visas, and across Africa the US refused 64% of F-1 applications in 2025. Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023, and UK refusals doubled to about 13% of all study-visa applications in early 2026, concentrated in South Asia and Africa. SBS's process moves one documented step at a time: a consent letter, then the registration fee, then an official fee receipt.
- Safer for your money. Fixed, itemised dollar fees, an official receipt after every payment, and clear advice on avoiding fake agents (below).
- Safer where you live. A Nigerian community already on campus, a gated guest house about seven minutes away, and 20+ years of experience welcoming African students. No country is risk-free, and experiences in a country of 1.4 billion people vary — which is why SBS puts community and arrival support first. India's national emergency number is 112.
WAEC and NECO: Your Certificate Already Travels
Indian admission rests on one test: is your secondary qualification recognised as equal to India's Class 12? The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) maintains the list of recognised foreign qualifications and issues an equivalence certificate where needed. Nigerian secondary qualifications — WAEC's WASSCE and NECO's SSCE — go through that evaluation, and SBS's admissions team manages the process for a one-time fee of about $60. Send your results to the team and they confirm your eligibility for each program before you commit to anything. Exam and equivalence fees are paid to the university and AIU and can change, so the team confirms current amounts when you apply.
No WAEC or NECO? You May Still Have a Way In
WAEC or NECO results are the usual route into SBS, but they are not the only one. Certain programs at SBS can admit students who do not hold WAEC or NECO results — whether your results are missing, incomplete or not yet available. Which programs, and on what terms, depends on your background, so SBS does not list them here. Message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730, tell them where you stand, and they will tell you what is open to you. Eligibility is assessed case by case.
Why Nigerian Students Choose SBS
- A Nigerian community already on campus. Nigeria is named among the most prominent nations in SBS's international community of 500+ African students from 16+ countries — you arrive among friends, not strangers.
- An automatic scholarship. 50% on degree programs (bringing tuition to $300 per semester) and 70% on diplomas, from enrollment, with no application, no essay and no conditions.
- Fees priced in dollars, with no surprises. The naira will keep moving, and your cost in naira will move with it. But at $300 per semester in tuition, the dollar total is a fraction of a single UK year.
- A guest house close to campus. The Synetic Guest House, about seven minutes away in a gated community, has private bathrooms, a shared kitchen and broadband from $50 per month.
- Programs with real career paths. Business, commerce, IT, AI, medical lab science, textile design and paramedical degrees, plus one-to-three-year diplomas.
- Twenty years of practice. Established in 2004, with 5,000+ graduates and degree programs affiliated to UGC-approved, NAAC-accredited government universities.
Degree and Diploma Programs Open to Nigerian Students
- Undergraduate: BBA, B.Com (Hons.), BCA, B.Sc IT, B.Sc IT with Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc Medical Lab Science, B.Sc Textile Designing, B.Voc (Paramedical)
- Postgraduate: MBA, M.Com, M.Sc IT
- Diploma (SIMTA): Project Management, Business Management & Entrepreneurship, Financial Analyst Management, Retailing & Logistics, Public Health & Hospital Administration, Information Technology, Advanced Information Technology, Data Science, Textile & Fashion Designing, Medical Lab Technology
Diplomas are the flexible, lower-cost option. With the 70% diploma scholarship, tuition starts at about $500 a year, plus a one-time $150 registration fee, and programs run for one, two or three years without the heavy examination or equivalence fees of a degree.
What It Costs at SBS
- Tuition: $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship

- One-time costs: $200 admission fee, $150 registration fee and about $60 for AIU equivalence

Frequently Asked Questions
Is studying in India a safer alternative to the UK, US or Canada for Nigerian students?
In terms of visa and policy risk, yes. Nigerians now face a suspension of new US student visas, the US refused 64% of F-1 applications from Africa in 2025, Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023, and UK refusals doubled to about 13% in early 2026. At SBS you also join a Nigerian community on campus and live in a gated guest house near campus. No country is risk-free, so SBS provides arrival support and a community of 500+ African students.
Is studying in India easier than studying in the UK or US?
In several ways, yes. Your WAEC or NECO results are evaluated for AIU equivalence by SBS's team, the application is document-based with no cut-off to beat, SBS issues your admission letter within 48 hours of application and fee confirmation, and you have one WhatsApp contact from first message to first month.
Can I get admission to SBS without WAEC or NECO results?
Yes, for certain programs. WAEC or NECO results are the usual route, but some SBS programs can admit students without it. SBS does not publish which programs, because the options depend on your background — message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730 with your situation and they will tell you what is available. Eligibility is assessed case by case.
Is WAEC or NECO accepted for admission to an Indian university?
Nigerian secondary qualifications, including WAEC's WASSCE and NECO's SSCE, go through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) equivalence evaluation for recognition as equal to India's Class 12. SBS's admissions team manages the process and confirms your eligibility for each program.
How many Nigerian students study in India?
India's AISHE survey recorded 3,205 Nigerian students in Indian higher education in 2023–24, up from 225 in 2010–11. Nigeria is the fifth-largest source of foreign students in India and the largest African source.
How much cheaper is studying at SBS than in the UK?
The UK now charges £558 for the student visa, £776 a year in the Immigration Health Surcharge and requires at least £10,539 in maintenance funds, all on top of tuition. At SBS, tuition is $300 per semester after the automatic scholarship.
Can Nigerians still get a US student visa?
From 1 January 2026 the United States suspended entry for Nigerians on new student (F, M) and exchange (J) visas, with exceptions for those who already held valid visas. Policies change, so check current US guidance before making plans.
What does the naira's fall mean for SBS fees?
SBS fees are quoted in US dollars, so the amount you pay in naira will move with the exchange rate. Because tuition is only $300 per semester, the total stays a fraction of the cost of a UK or US year.
Is there a scholarship for Nigerian students at SBS?
Yes. Every African student receives an automatic tuition scholarship from enrollment — 50% on degree programs and 70% on diplomas — with no separate application, essay or conditions.
Where do Nigerian students apply for the Indian student visa?
Students apply online through the Indian Visa Online portal and then complete the process with the Indian mission that serves their location, in Abuja or Lagos. SBS confirms the exact office, documents and appointment process for your application.
How do I avoid admission and visa scams?
Apply directly through SBS's official WhatsApp line at +91 96464 77730 and pay only against an official SBS fee receipt. Every payment in the SBS process is followed by an official document, so never pay anyone who cannot show you one.
Will my Indian degree be recognised in Nigeria?
SBS's degree programs are affiliated to UGC-approved, NAAC-accredited government universities. Recognition rules are set by Nigeria's education authorities, so confirm the requirements for your field before you enroll. SBS provides the official transcripts and documents needed for verification.
How does a Nigerian student start the application process?
By messaging an SBS representative on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730. From there, SBS vets your WAEC or NECO documents, issues a Consent/Admission Letter within 48 hours, and guides you through registration, the Study in India portal, your visa application and your visa collection.
