Why SBS Is the Best College for Students from Liberia

India is the safer, cheaper, easier route to a recognised degree — and SBS hosts the largest Liberian student community of any campus there. WASSCE accepted, an automatic 50% scholarship and Flag Day celebrated campus-wide.
When a Passing WASSCE Still Isn't Enough
Liberian students do what the system asks of them. Thousands pass the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) — five subjects is the national bar for completing high school — and then discover that the certificate alone does not open the university door. Many are told to sit yet another entrance test first. In 2025, fewer than one in four candidates sitting the University of Liberia's entrance exam qualified for admission, and that was reported as an improvement on earlier years. In 2013, all 25,000 candidates who took the test failed.
The scholarship route abroad is just as narrow. For the 2026–27 academic year, India's ICCR India-Africa Maitri scholarships gave Liberia an increased allocation of 20 places — against 219 applications (90 undergraduate, 114 Master's and 15 PhD). It is a scholarship well worth applying for, and most who apply will not receive it.
There is a third path, and Liberian students have been taking it for years: a fully recognised Indian degree at SBS (Synetic Business School) in Ludhiana, Punjab — the campus that hosts the largest Liberian student community in India.
Safer, Cheaper, Easier: Why India Beats the Usual Alternatives
When a Liberian family weighs a degree abroad, the real comparison is rarely India versus staying home. It is India versus the UK, the US or Canada. On the three questions that matter most, India at SBS comes out ahead.
Cheaper
A UK student visa now costs £558, plus £776 a year in the Immigration Health Surcharge, plus proof of at least £10,539 in maintenance funds (outside London) on top of first-year tuition — before you pay a single course fee. At SBS, tuition is just $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship. Fees are quoted in dollars, so your family can budget in a currency it already handles.
Easier
- Your certificate is the key. Your WASSCE is evaluated for equivalence by the Association of Indian Universities, and SBS handles that paperwork for you.
- One point of contact. One WhatsApp number takes you from your first message to your first month on campus.
- A document-based path. The eight steps below run on vetting your documents, not on beating a cut-off. SBS issues your admission letter within 48 hours of application and fee confirmation.
- Help after you land. FRRO registration, university registration and visa/permit support are handled with you on arrival.
- English throughout. Every program is taught in English.
Safer
- A safer bet. The odds elsewhere are steep for African applicants. In 2025 the US refused 64% of F-1 student visa applications from Africa. Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023. UK refusals doubled to about 13% of all study-visa applications in early 2026, concentrated in South Asia and Africa. SBS's process moves one documented step at a time: a consent letter first, then the registration fee, then an official fee receipt.
- Safer for your money. Fixed, itemised dollar fees and an official receipt for every payment.
- Safer where you live. You join the largest Liberian community in India, in a gated guest house about seven minutes from campus, at an institution that has welcomed African students for 20+ years. No country is risk-free, and experiences in a country of 1.4 billion people vary — which is why SBS puts community and arrival support first. India's national emergency number is 112.
Ten Reasons Liberian Students Choose SBS
- The largest Liberian community in India. You arrive into a community, not a crowd of strangers — seniors who have already done the visa, the flight and the first month can tell you what to expect.
- WASSCE is your key. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) evaluates your WASSCE for equivalence, and SBS's admissions team handles the paperwork for you.
- An automatic scholarship. 50% on degree programs (bringing tuition to $300 per semester) and 70% on diplomas, from enrollment — no essay, no separate application.
- Fees you can plan in dollars. US dollars circulate widely in Liberia alongside the Liberian dollar, and SBS quotes its fees in dollars — so your family can budget in a currency it already handles every day.
- A Flag Day that paints the whole campus. Every 24 August, Liberia's Flag Day is marked on campus with the anthem, the flag raising, speeches, poems and performances — and Liberian students from other institutions travel in to join.
- Sport and culture built for international students. SBS fields international football and kickball teams, and its events are designed around cultural exchange.
- A guest house that feels like home. The Synetic Guest House offers secure, gated, broadband-connected rooms with private bathrooms and a shared kitchen, from $50 per month.
- Real programs for real careers. Degrees in business, commerce, IT, AI, medical lab science, textile design and paramedical sciences — plus one-to-three-year diplomas.
- Two decades of experience. Established in 2004, with 5,000+ graduates and students from 16+ countries, and degree programs affiliated to UGC-approved, NAAC-accredited government universities.
- Help from the first message to the first month. From your consent letter to your FRRO registration on arrival, the SBS team walks you through every step.
Liberia and India: A Relationship With Real History
India's ties to Liberia are not new. On 30 January 2007, India's first all-women Formed Police Unit — the first of its kind in the history of UN peacekeeping — arrived in Monrovia, and rotations of Indian policewomen served alongside Liberian security institutions for nearly a decade. Today that goodwill shows up in classrooms: in July 2026 the Embassy of India in Monrovia honoured 20 Liberian ICCR scholars before they left for Indian universities. A student who chooses SBS is walking a road that Liberia and India have been building together for a long time.
From WASSCE to Ludhiana: How Equivalence Works
Before any Indian university can admit an international student, the student's secondary qualification has to be recognised as equal to India's Class 12. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) maintains the list of recognised foreign qualifications and, where a certificate is not on it, issues an equivalence certificate after evaluating it. For Liberian applicants that means your WASSCE results are evaluated and confirmed valid for admission to an Indian degree program. SBS's admissions team manages the process directly, for a one-time fee of about $60, rather than leaving you to navigate it alone from Monrovia. Exam and equivalence fees are paid to the university and AIU and can change, so the team confirms the current amount when you apply.
No WASSCE? You May Still Have a Way In
WASSCE is the usual route into SBS, but it is not the only one. Certain programs at SBS can admit students who do not hold a WASSCE certificate — whether your results are missing, incomplete or not yet available. Which programs, and on what terms, depends on your background, so SBS does not list them here. Message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730, tell them where you stand, and they will tell you what is open to you. Eligibility is assessed case by case.
Degree and Diploma Programs Open to Liberian Students
Liberian students can apply to SBS's full range of UGC-recognised programs:
- Undergraduate: BBA, B.Com (Hons.), BCA, B.Sc IT, B.Sc IT with Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc Medical Lab Science, B.Sc Textile Designing, B.Voc (Paramedical)
- Postgraduate: MBA, M.Com, M.Sc IT
- Diploma (SIMTA): Project Management, Business Management & Entrepreneurship, Financial Analyst Management, Retailing & Logistics, Public Health & Hospital Administration, Information Technology, Advanced Information Technology, Data Science, Textile & Fashion Designing, Medical Lab Technology
With the 70% diploma scholarship, tuition starts at about $500 a year, plus a one-time $150 registration fee. Diplomas run for one, two or three years and come without the heavy examination and equivalence fees of a degree, which makes them a flexible, lower-cost way in — or a way to add a second credential later.
A Community, Not Just a Campus
Every year on 24 August — the anniversary of Liberia's 1847 flag adoption — the Liberian flag goes up on the SBS campus lawn, the national anthem is sung and saluted by students and staff together, and speeches, poems and cultural performances follow. At Flag Day 2026, Liberian students from other institutions in the region came to join SBS's own, and Indian students and faculty stood alongside them throughout. You can read the full story in our Liberia Flag Day 2026 report.
It is not a one-off. When SBS hosted an international students' meet, the guests who filled the hall were predominantly Liberian — students from colleges and universities across India choosing Ludhiana as the place to gather. That story is here. On the field, SBS's international football and kickball teams give students a place to compete and belong. For a first-year student thousands of kilometres from home, that is the difference between surviving a semester and settling into it.
Where You'll Live: The Synetic Guest House
The Synetic Guest House sits in Rajgarh Fusion, a secure gated community on Chandigarh Road, about 4 km — roughly seven minutes — from campus. Rooms are American-style apartment units with private bathrooms and balconies, sharing an open lobby and a fully equipped kitchen, so you can cook for yourself. Rates are $100 per month for a single room or $50 per person per month for twin sharing, plus separate charges for electricity, broadband and housekeeping. The full breakdown is in our guide to the Synetic Guest House.
What It Actually Costs
- Tuition: $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship
- Exam fee: about $140 per semester, paid to the university (this can change)
- One-time costs: $200 admission fee, $150 registration fee and about $60 for AIU equivalence
- Accommodation: $100 per month for a single room, $50 per person for twin sharing, plus utilities
For comparison, a UK student visa now costs £558, plus £776 a year in the Immigration Health Surcharge, plus proof of at least £10,539 in maintenance funds (outside London) on top of first-year tuition — before you have paid a single course fee. Our budgeting guide for African and international students shows how to plan each payment so none of them is a surprise.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is studying in India a safer alternative to the UK, US or Canada for Liberian students?
In terms of visa and policy risk, yes. In 2025 the US refused 64% of F-1 student visa applications from Africa, Canada approved only 36% of study permit applications from applicants living in Africa in 2023, and UK refusals doubled to about 13% of study-visa applications in early 2026. At SBS you also join the largest Liberian community in India and live in a gated guest house near campus. No country is risk-free, so SBS pairs every student with arrival support and a community of 500+ African students.
Is studying in India cheaper and easier than studying in the UK?
Yes. A UK student visa costs £558, plus £776 a year in health surcharge and proof of at least £10,539 in funds, before tuition. At SBS, tuition is $300 per semester after the automatic 50% scholarship. The process is also simpler: SBS's team handles your WASSCE equivalence, the application is document-based, and you have one WhatsApp contact from first message to first month.
Can I get admission to SBS without a WASSCE certificate?
Yes, for certain programs. WASSCE is the usual route, but some SBS programs can admit students without it. SBS does not publish which programs, because the options depend on your background — message the admissions team on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730 with your situation and they will tell you what is available. Eligibility is assessed case by case.
Is a WASSCE certificate accepted for admission to an Indian university?
Yes. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) evaluates foreign secondary qualifications for equivalence to India's Class 12, and WASSCE is the standard West African qualification SBS's admissions team processes for Liberian applicants. SBS handles the equivalence paperwork for you.
Is SBS really the campus with the most Liberian students in India?
SBS hosts the largest Liberian student community of any campus in India. Liberia is the single largest national community within SBS's 500+ African students from 16+ countries.
How much does it cost a Liberian student to study at SBS?
After the automatic 50% scholarship, tuition is $300 per semester plus an exam fee of about $140, roughly $440 per semester. One-time costs are a $200 admission fee, a $150 registration fee and an AIU equivalence fee of about $60. Exam and equivalence fees are set by the university and AIU and can change.
Do Liberian students have to apply separately for the scholarship?
No. The scholarship applies automatically to every African student from enrollment — 50% on degree programs and 70% on diplomas — with no separate application, essay or conditions.
I didn't get an ICCR scholarship. Can I still study in India?
Yes. ICCR places are limited — Liberia had 20 for 2026–27 against 219 applications — but they are not the only way in. SBS admits students directly, and its automatic 50% scholarship needs no application, so a student who missed the ICCR can still enroll on a fully recognised degree program.
Where do Liberian students live in Ludhiana?
Most international students stay at the Synetic Guest House in Rajgarh Fusion, a secure gated community about 4 km — roughly seven minutes — from campus. Rooms have private bathrooms and balconies, with a shared kitchen and broadband. A single room costs $100 per month and twin sharing $50 per person per month, plus utilities.
Which Indian mission serves Liberian student visa applicants?
The Embassy of India in Monrovia serves Liberia. SBS confirms the exact appointment process and documents for your application once your consent letter is issued.
Do I need a yellow fever certificate to travel to India from Liberia?
Yes. Liberia is a yellow fever endemic country, so travelers must carry a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate on arrival in India. Get vaccinated and obtain the official yellow card before you fly.
When does SBS celebrate Liberia Flag Day?
Every year on 24 August, the anniversary of Liberia's 1847 flag adoption. The flag is raised on the campus lawn, the national anthem is sung, and students and staff share speeches, poems and cultural performances — with Liberian students from other institutions traveling in to take part.
Are diploma programs open to Liberian students?
Yes. SIMTA diplomas run for one, two or three years, are open to students from any academic stream, and do not carry the heavy examination or equivalence fees of a degree. With the 70% diploma scholarship, tuition starts at about $500 a year, plus a one-time $150 registration fee.
Will my Indian degree be recognised in Liberia?
SBS's degree programs are affiliated to UGC-approved, NAAC-accredited government universities. Recognition rules are set by each country's education authority, so confirm the requirements for your field with the relevant Liberian body before you enroll. SBS provides the official transcripts and documents needed for verification.
How does a Liberian student start the application process?
By messaging an SBS representative on WhatsApp at +91 96464 77730. From there, SBS vets your WASSCE documents, issues a Consent/Admission Letter within 48 hours, and guides you step by step through registration, the Study in India portal, your visa application and your visa collection appointment.
