Subject Overview

This Skill Enhancement Course is a hands-on computer literacy workshop — practical exposure to the operating systems and office software every management graduate needs. You'll cover computer fundamentals, data representation and number systems, computer software and memory, and build working proficiency in MS-Word, MS-PowerPoint, and MS-Excel. This is a 2-credit paper across 4 units, designed to be immediately useful in any office role.

Unit 1: Computer fundamentals & data representation

Data, instruction and information, characteristics and applications of computers, input-output devices, hardware, software, humanware and firmware, block diagram and functional units of a computer, number systems and their conversion

Unit 2: Computer software & Windows operating system

Application vs. system software, compilers and interpreters, generations of programming languages, primary and secondary memory, storage media, directory and file manipulation in Windows

Unit 3: MS-Word & MS-PowerPoint

Creating, formatting, saving and printing documents, alignment, indents, lists and headers/footers, mail merge, creating and designing presentations, slide sorter view, slide shows, inserting graphics

Unit 4: MS-Excel

Spreadsheet creation and formatting, charts and graphs, menu commands and toolbars, cell editing and protection, calculation of financial and statistical functions using formulas
