Subject Overview

Database Management Systems-I is BCA's core database paper: data models and database design (keys, constraints, the ER model), relational algebra and SQL (DDL/DML/DCL, aggregate functions, joins, advanced SQL including views, cursors, stored procedures and triggers), and functional dependencies and normalization through BCNF/4NF/5NF. A 3-credit core theory paper.

Unit 1: Introduction to databases and data models

Definitions of data, database and DBMS, database applications, advantages/disadvantages of DBMS, roles of database users and administrators, data model types (hierarchical, network, relational, object-oriented)

Unit 2: Database design

Keys — primary, candidate, super, foreign, composite, alternate, unique, surrogate; constraints; Entity-Relationship model, entities, attributes, relationships, ER diagrams, weak entity sets, extended ER features, introduction to the relational model

Unit 3: Relational algebra and SQL

Relational algebra operations (selection, projection, set operations, join, division); SQL DDL/DML/DCL, aggregate functions, logical operators, predicates, clauses (group by, having, order by), inner/natural/outer joins; advanced SQL — analytical, hierarchical and recursive queries, views, cursors, stored procedures, triggers, dynamic SQL

Functional dependencies and Armstrong's axioms, properties (reflexivity, augmentation, transitivity), types of dependencies, closure of functional dependencies, normal forms (1NF through BCNF, 4NF, 5NF), denormalization
