Fundamental of Statistics
Subject Overview
Fundamental of Statistics equips BCA students with the data-analysis vocabulary used throughout the degree — data collection methods, classification and tabular/diagrammatic/graphic presentation of data, measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, harmonic mean) and measures of dispersion (range, mean deviation, standard deviation, coefficient of variation). A 3-credit core theory paper.

Unit 1: Statistics and data collection
Origin, features, scope, functions, uses, importance and limitations of statistics; primary and secondary data collection methods, statistical errors, rounding off data
Unit 2: Classification and presentation of data
Classification objectives and methods; tabular presentation (components of a statistical table, construction rules, types of tables); diagrammatic and graphic presentation — types of diagrams and graphs
Unit 3: Measures of central tendency
Purpose and characteristics of a good average, arithmetic mean, median, mode — calculation, merits and demerits of each, harmonic mean and its properties
Unit 4: Measures of dispersion
Objectives and properties of a good measure of dispersion, range, mean deviation, standard deviation, coefficient of variation — calculation, merits and demerits of each
