Banking Services Management is the first Banking & Insurance specialisation elective — a deep dive into how India's banking system actually works. You'll cover the structure of Indian banking (commercial, regional rural, and cooperative banks), the Reserve Bank of India's role and banking reforms (Narasimham Committee, Basel II, capital adequacy), and emerging trends like e-banking, mobile banking, and core banking. The final unit covers risk management within banks and financial statement analysis of bank balance sheets. This is a 6-credit elective paper across 4 units, for students interested in banking careers.

Unit 1: Structure of the Indian banking system
Definition, importance and functions of a bank, structure and organisation of commercial, regional rural and cooperative banks, functions of banks in economic development
Unit 2: RBI & banking reforms
Management and structure of the RBI, functions and monetary policy tools, credit control techniques, Narasimham Committee recommendations, Verma Panel Report, Basel II norms, Capital Adequacy Ratio, NPA norms, banking ombudsman
Unit 3: Emerging trends in banking
E-banking, mobile banking, RTGS and NEFT, core banking, wholesale vs. retail banking, universal and narrow banking, offshore banking, asset classification, RBI internet banking guidelines, cheque truncation system
Unit 4: Risk management & bank performance
Interest rate risk, credit risk, liquidity management, operational and market risk management in banks, capital adequacy, investment banking and other services, analysis of bank balance sheets and financial performance ratios
