Blood Banking
Subject Overview
Blood Banking covers blood group systems and grouping technique, compatibility testing and cross-matching, transfusion complications and their investigation, preparation of blood component fractions (packed red cells, platelet concentrate, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate), haemapheresis, and quality control in the blood bank. A 4-credit open elective theory paper.

Unit 1: Blood group systems and grouping technique
Introduction to and history of blood group systems, ABO and Rh blood group systems, sources of error in blood grouping, complete vs incomplete antibodies, tests for A/B substance secretion, titration and storage of grouping antisera, anticoagulants used in transfusion, procedure for donor blood collection
Unit 2: Compatibility testing and transfusion complications
Compatibility testing — collection for cross-matching, major and minor cross matching, use of enzymes (papain) in the blood bank; complications and hazards of transfusion; investigation of transfusion reactions and mismatched transfusion, direct and indirect Coombs tests
Unit 3: Blood components and quality control
Preparation of packed/washed/frozen red cells, platelet-rich plasma/concentrate/frozen platelets, fresh plasma/FFP/cryoprecipitate; blood substitutes; haemapheresis for leucocytes, platelets and plasma; quality control in the blood bank
