Subject Overview
Elements of Textiles is the very first paper of the B.Sc Textile Design program — an overview of the textile industry and the fibres and yarns that everything else in the degree builds on. You'll survey the major production segments (spinning, weaving, processing, garmenting, home furnishing), study natural and man-made fibres and how their properties affect aesthetics, durability, comfort and care, then move into yarn classification, spinning processes and yarn numbering, and close with the basics of fabric manufacturing and loom production. This is a 2-credit core theory paper across 4 units, and it's the essential vocabulary every later Textile Design paper assumes you already know.

Unit 1: Textile industry overview
Major production segments — spinning, weaving, processing, garmenting and home furnishing sectors in India, SWOT analysis of the industry
Unit 2: Textile fibres
Fibre classification, essential properties affecting aesthetics, durability, comfort, safety and care, natural fibres (cotton, flax, jute, hemp, silk, wool), man-made cellulose fibres (viscose rayon, acetate, Tencel), man-made synthetic fibres (nylon, polyester, acrylic, spandex, olefin), latest fibres
Unit 3: Textile yarns and yarn manufacturing
Yarn classification, ring spinning and open-end spinning, properties of yarns, yarn numbering system, yarn texturing, fancy yarns, sewing threads
Unit 4: Fabric manufacturing
Preparatory processes for fabric manufacturing, motions of weaving, calculation of loom production
