Subject Overview

This general elective builds entrepreneurial competencies and project management skills — the entrepreneurial mindset, women/rural/social entrepreneurship, opportunity generation and business idea creation, IPR and business plan writing through venture exit strategies, and project analysis, financing (including venture capital) and implementation with PERT/CPM. A 4-credit general elective theory paper.

Unit 1: Understanding the entrepreneur

Concept, characteristics and functions of an entrepreneur, entrepreneur vs manager, types of entrepreneurs, entrepreneurial mindset and readiness, myths and realities, entrepreneurship vs intrapreneurship, women entrepreneurs, rural and social entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial support systems and government's role

Unit 2: Opportunity and idea generation

Entrepreneurial motivation concept and theories, generating and exploiting new entry opportunities, risk reduction strategies, creativity and business idea generation, sources and methods of generating new ideas, entrepreneurial innovation, opportunity recognition and assessment, product planning and development

Unit 3: Protecting ideas and the business plan

IPR, patents, trademarks, copyrights, licensing, product safety and other legal issues in setting up an organization, concept and value of a business plan, writing and implementing the plan, succession planning and exit strategies, reasons for business plan and venture failure

Unit 4: Project management

Concept, facets and key issues of project management, generation and screening of project ideas, market/technical/financial project analysis, investment criteria and risk analysis, project financing including venture capital, project planning and control, PERT and CPM network techniques, post-audit project review
