Topic 1
What is marketing?
Marketing is the process of understanding customers' needs and communicating, delivering and exchanging offers that have value for them. It is not just advertising — it includes choosing the right customer, product, price, place and message. The classic marketing mix (4Ps): Product (what you sell), Price (what it costs), Place (where and how it reaches customers) and Promotion (how you tell people about it).
Topic 2
How customers think, choose and buy
- 1Need recognition
"My laptop is slow"
- 2Information search
Ask friends, search online
- 3Compare options
Price, reviews, trust
- 4Purchase decision
Choose and pay
- 5Post-purchase feeling
Satisfied, tells others — or regrets
Customers are influenced by emotion (feeling, status, fear of missing out), logic (price, features), trust (reviews, recommendations) and convenience.
Topic 3
Types of digital marketing
| Type | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Social media marketing | Promoting on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube | Reels showing your product |
| Content marketing | Useful blogs, videos or guides that attract customers | "5 ways to speed up your laptop" video |
| Search engine optimisation (SEO) | Ranking higher in Google results | A Google Business Profile for your service |
| Email and WhatsApp marketing | Direct messages to interested people | Broadcast list with offers |
| Influencer marketing | Getting creators to recommend you | A college influencer reviews your product |
| Paid ads | Paying for ads on Google or social media | ₹200 boosted Instagram post |
Topic 4
Defining a clear target customer
Selling to "everyone" means your message speaks to no one. A target customer is the specific person most likely to buy.
- Who
- Age, occupation, location
- Problem
- What bothers them
- Where they are
- Which apps, places, groups
- What they value
- Price, speed, quality, style
Example
Not "students", but "first-year hostel students who need cheap, quick laptop repairs before exams".
Topic 5
Crafting your message
A strong marketing message answers three questions: what you sell, who it helps and why it matters (the benefit, not just the feature).
Example
Feature: "I make Instagram posts." Benefit-led message: "Get more customers into your café with 10 scroll-stopping Instagram posts a month — ₹999."
Exam tip
In answers, contrast a feature with a benefit. Customers buy benefits.
