A low angle makes the subject taller and stronger, a high angle makes the subject smaller, and an eye-level shot is neutral. White balance adjusts colour so that white looks white: daylight about 5500 K, shade about 7000 K, tungsten about 3000 K, fluorescent about 4000 K. Wrong white balance gives orange (too warm) or blue (too cool) casts.

Topic 3

Colour theory in photography

Use the colour wheel: complementary colours (blue against orange) make a bold image; analogous colours give harmony; neutral backgrounds let garment colours stand out.

Leading line

Negative space
