Subject Overview
Introduction to Weaving is the practical counterpart to Elements of Textiles — a hands-on studio paper where students actually learn to operate a loom and develop basic weave structures. You'll learn the types and functions of looms and how to set up a table loom, then fabric representation and repeat on graph paper, drafting, lifting and denting principles, before setting up warps and weaving simple structures (plain, basket and rib weave) with creative weft materials. This is a 3-credit core practical paper across 3 units, graded on documented samples, weaving skill, and consistent studio work.

Unit 1: Loom fundamentals
Basic types and functions of a loom, parts and functions of a table loom
Unit 2: Fabric representation & loom setup
Methods of fabric representation, concept of repeat on point/graph paper, principles of drafting, lifting and denting, setting up a loom for weaving, simple weaves and their characteristics
Unit 3: Weaving simple structures
Usage of different reeds, warp length and width calculation, weaving plain weave and its variations (basket weave, rib weave) using 2 shafts, creative weaving with non-conventional weft materials, colour and weave effect samples
