Subject Overview

Visual Merchandising covers the functional and artistic discipline of presenting merchandise for store and window display, applying design principles to drive customer engagement. You'll study the exterior of a store (signage, marquees, outdoor display) and window types, store interiors, displays and fixtures, then colour, texture and lighting psychology in merchandising, and close with display types, floor plans and merchandise planning. This is a 2-credit theory + practical paper across 4 units.

Unit 1: Store exteriors & windows

Visual merchandising meaning and advantages, exterior of store — signs, marquees, outdoor display, types of windows — close back, open back, island, shadow boxes
