- Customer reach: websites, e-commerce, digital marketing, mobile apps.
Topic 2
Digital transformation
Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, changing how it operates and delivers value to customers.
- 1Digitisation
Converting paper records to digital form
- 2Digitalisation
Using digital tools to improve existing processes
- 3Digital transformation
Redesigning the business model around digital capabilities
- Enablers: cloud computing, mobile, analytics and AI, Internet of Things, APIs, UPI and digital public infrastructure.
- Challenges: legacy systems, skills gaps, cyber security, change resistance, cost.
Example
UPI, Aadhaar e-KYC and GSTN together let even small Indian traders take digital payments, verify customers and file returns online.
Topic 3
Hardware and software concepts
Hardware
Input (keyboard, scanner), CPU (ALU, control unit), memory (RAM, ROM, cache), storage (SSD, HDD, cloud), output (monitor, printer)
System software
Operating system, device drivers, utilities
Application software
Office suites, accounting (Tally), ERP, browsers
Humanware
Users and IT staff
- Software licensing: proprietary (MS Office), open source (LibreOffice), Software-as-a-Service subscriptions (Microsoft 365, Google Workspace).
Topic 4
Operating system functions
Process management
Scheduling programs and multitasking
Memory management
Allocating RAM to programs
File management
Creating, organising and protecting files and folders
Device management
Drivers and input/output control
Security
User accounts, passwords, permissions
User interface
Graphical (GUI) or command line
- Examples: Windows, macOS, Linux; mobile — Android, iOS.
Topic 5
Cloud-based business applications
Cloud computing delivers computing resources — servers, storage, software — over the internet on a pay-as-you-use basis.
| Service model | What the provider supplies | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| SaaS (software as a service) | Ready-to-use applications | Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoho Books, Salesforce |
| PaaS (platform as a service) | Platform to build and run apps | Google App Engine, Azure App Service |
| IaaS (infrastructure as a service) | Virtual servers, storage, networks | AWS EC2, Microsoft Azure VMs |
- Deployment models: public, private, hybrid and community cloud.
- Benefits: low upfront cost, scalability, anywhere access, automatic updates, collaboration. Risks: dependence on internet, data privacy, vendor lock-in.
Topic 6
Professional documents and reports in Word
- Create, save and print: File → New; Ctrl + S to save (.docx); Ctrl + P to print with print preview.
- Character formatting: font, size, bold (Ctrl + B), italic (Ctrl + I), underline (Ctrl + U), colour.
- Paragraph formatting: alignment (left, centre, right, justify), indents (left, right, first-line, hanging), line spacing.
- Lists: bullets and numbering.
- Headers and footers: text shown on every page — company name, page numbers, date.
- Page setup: margins, orientation (portrait/landscape) and paper size.
- Reports: use built-in heading styles, automatic table of contents, captions, footnotes, page numbers and section breaks; export to PDF for sharing.
Topic 7
Presentations in PowerPoint
- Start with a layout (title slide, title and content) and a design theme.
- Add text, pictures, charts, tables and SmartArt.
- Slide sorter view shows thumbnails of all slides to rearrange them.
- Slide show (F5) presents slides full-screen.
- Animations move objects on a slide; transitions are effects between slides.
Purpose
Documents: letters, reports
