Creativity is the ability to generate new and useful ideas.

Sources of business ideas: hobbies, customer complaints, gaps in the market, new technology, trends, imports and government policy. Techniques: brainstorming, mind mapping, SCAMPER, focus groups. Blocks to creativity: fear of failure, rigid thinking, lack of time, criticism, routine habits and a negative environment.

A business plan is a written document describing the venture, its market, operations, management and finances.

Why business plans fail: unrealistic assumptions, poor market research, weak financial planning, poor execution, lack of commitment and ignoring competition.
Topic 3
MSMEs: definition and characteristics
Under the MSMED Act (revised criteria from 2020), enterprises are classified by investment in plant and machinery and turnover:

(Limits were raised further in the 2025 Union Budget; always check the current notification.) Characteristics: small investment, local markets, labour-intensive, flexible and owner-managed.
Topic 4
Role of MSMEs and government policy
Advantages and role: large employment, use of local resources, balanced regional development, exports, ancillary support to large industries and entrepreneurship. Problems: finance, technology, marketing, raw materials and delayed payments. Government policies: Udyam registration, MUDRA loans, CGTMSE credit guarantees, priority-sector lending, public procurement preference, PMEGP (employment generation subsidy), and the Samadhaan portal for delayed payments.
