Topic 2
The Balanced Scorecard
Kaplan and Norton (1992) proposed measuring performance from four perspectives that translate strategy into objectives and measures.
Financial
How do we look to shareholders? — ROI, revenue growth, EVA
Customer
How do customers see us? — satisfaction, retention, share
Internal business process
What must we excel at? — quality, cycle time, innovation
Learning and growth
Can we continue to improve? — skills, systems, culture
- Strategy map: cause-and-effect links — learning drives better processes, which delight customers, which improve financial results.
Example
A bank's scorecard: financial — return on assets; customer — Net Promoter Score; process — loan turnaround time; learning — digital skills training hours.
Topic 3
The EFQM model
- EFQM Excellence Model (European Foundation for Quality Management; substantially revised in 2020) assesses organisational excellence.
Direction
Purpose, vision and strategy; organisational culture and leadership
Execution
Engaging stakeholders; creating sustainable value; driving performance and transformation
Results
Stakeholder perceptions; strategic and operational performance
- RADAR logic: results, approaches, deploy, assess and refine — used for self-assessment and awards.
- Indian counterparts: CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence (based on EFQM), Rajiv Gandhi National Quality Award.
Topic 4
Economic Value Added
Economic Value Added
EVA = NOPAT − (WACC × Capital employed)
NOPAT
EBIT × (1 − t)
Market Value Added
MVA = Market value of equity (and debt) − Capital invested
Link
MVA = PV of future EVAs
Example
EBIT ₹200 crore, tax 25%, capital employed ₹1,000 crore, WACC 12%. NOPAT = ₹150 crore; capital charge = ₹120 crore; EVA = ₹30 crore — the firm created value this year.
- Implications: EVA aligns managers with shareholders (bonus banks), discourages over-investment, highlights the cost of equity; limitations: accounting adjustments, short-term focus, size bias.
- EVA in performance management: managers are rewarded for creating returns above the cost of capital, aligning their interests with shareholders (bonus banks smooth payouts).
Topic 5
Building a high-performance culture
- Features: clear goals, accountability, continuous feedback, learning, empowerment, recognition, openness to change, collaboration.
- High-performance work practices: selective hiring, training, teams, performance-based pay, information sharing, employee involvement.
Topic 6
Performance management and rewards
- Link: merit pay increases, bonuses, incentives, promotions and development opportunities tied to performance ratings.
- Design issues: line of sight between effort and reward, differentiation of high performers, fairness and transparency, avoiding short-termism.
