Subject Overview
Pattern Making and Draping teaches the technical standardisation behind every garment — how to take measurements, build basic blocks, and develop the patterns that turn a design into a produced product. You'll learn measurement charts and pattern-making techniques for proper fall and fit, developing filing, working and production patterns, dart manipulation and slashing/spreading techniques for tops, skirts and dresses, and close with an introduction to draping technique on beds, curtains and upholstered furniture. This is a 2-credit core practical paper across 5 units.

Unit 1: Pattern making fundamentals
Importance of pattern making for industrial standardisation, taking measurements, measurement charts, pattern-making techniques for proper fall and fit, correlating the human body with dress forms and patterns
Unit 2: Pattern types & development
Basic blocks and their importance, developing the first pattern for filing/recording/future reference, developing working patterns and production patterns
Unit 3: Garment patterns
Dart manipulation, slashing and spreading techniques for proper fall and fit, developing patterns for a top/kurti/T-shirt, a skirt, and a combined dress
Unit 4: Introduction to draping
Draping technique and process fundamentals
Unit 5: Draping application
Draping fabric on a bed, curtain, and fully/half-covered sofa or chair, with a demonstration by a professional, culminating in an executed and presented end product
