Topic 1
Basic blocks
A basic block is a fitted pattern without style details. Blocks: bodice, skirt, sleeve, trouser.

| First (master) pattern | Drafted from measurements; stored for reference |
| Working pattern | Cut from the block with design changes |
| Production pattern | Final pattern with seam allowance, notches, grain line and labels |
Exam tip
Every pattern piece should carry: name, size, number of pieces to cut, grain line and notches.
Topic 2
Marking the pattern
Add seam allowance (1.5 cm for most seams, 2.5 cm hems), notches to match pieces, grain line arrows, button and dart positions and cutting instructions.
